JAMES THOMPSON JONES, SR. AND SARAH JANET CARNEY JONES' CHILDREN WERE:
ABIGAIL M. J. JONES, SARAH F.
JONES, THOMAS LOVICK JONES,
EVAN ROBERT JONES, JOHN WESLEY JONES, ELIZABETH
ANN JONES.
THE THOMAS LOVICK AND MARTHA HUNTER JONES FAMILY
I KNEW MANY OF LOVICK'S DESCENDANTS PERSONALLY
AND LOVED THEM VERY MUCH.
MANY OF THEM LIVED IN THE STANTON,
TENNESSEE AREA. I TAUGHT SEVERAL OF THE
CHILDREN AT THE STANTON SCHOOL, TWO YEARS
BEFORE I TAUGHT AT DANCYVILLE.
~ UNCLE SAM
ONE OF LOVICK'S SLAVES, HIS PERSONAL
SERVANT WAS CALLED "UNCLE SAM."
DURING
THE CIVIL WAR THE YANKEE SOLDIERS CAME
LOOKING FOR MONEY. THE FAMILY WAS ALL LINED
UP IN THE ROOM WHILE THE SOLDIERS
SEARCHED. UNCLE SAM WAS HOLDING ONE
OF THE LITTLE ONES IN HIS ARMS AND
HOLDING ANOTHER ONE BY THE HAND. THE
SOLDIERS MADE A MOVE TOWARD MARTHA AND HE
SAID, " IF YOU PUT ONE HAND ON HER
I WILL KILL YOU IF IT IS THE
LAST BREATH I EVER TAKE." THE SOLDIERS
WALKED AWAY
AND YES, THE MONEY WAS IN MARTHA'S BOSOM.
WHEN THE SLAVES WERE FREED UNCLE SAM'S
WIFE FELT THEY SHOULD MOVE AWAY IN
ORDER TO REALIZE THEIR SENSE OF FREEDOM.
THEY MOVED TO THE RUSSELL FARM
( LOVICK'S SISTER SARAH.) THE NEXT MORNING,
EARLY, UNCLE SAM KNOCKED ON LOVICK'S DOOR
AND SAID IF THEY COULD NOT SEND A
WAGON TO BRING THEM BACK HOME HE WOULD HAVE
TO TOTE THEIR THINGS BACK IN HIS HANDS,
ONE AT A TIME.
UNCLE SAM IS BURIED IN THE
JONES FAMILY CEMETERY AT THE FOOT OF LOVICK'S
GRAVE.
~ JAMES THOMPSON JONES (1852-1861)
I HAVE A LETTER DATED MARCH
3, 1861, MY GRANDMOTHER WAS WRITING THE NEWS
TO
HER BROTHER-IN-LAW WHO HAD TEMPORARILY MOVED TO
TEXAS. SHE SAID MARTHA WAS
VERY ILL AFTER A MISCARRIAGE. ON THE WAY
HOME FROM SCHOOL JAMES THOMPSON JONES, SR'S OLDEST
SON, JAMES THOMPSON JONES, JR., AGE 9,
CAUGHT A RIDE IN THE WAGON OF A
NEIGHBOR. HE WAS SITTING WITH HIS
BACK TO THE FRONT GATE OF THE WAGON,
THE GATE FELL OUT, HE FELL AND WAS
KILLED INSTANTLY. THE DOCTOR SAID IF MARTHA
HEARD ABOUT THE ACCIDENT IT WOULD KILL
HER. THEY SENT ALL THE CHILDREN TO
ANOTHER LOCATION UNTIL SHE WAS BETTER ABLE
TO HEAR THE NEWS.
~ H.E.W. JONES (1869-1921)
HENRY ELLERSON WALKER JONES, SON OF LOVICK AND
MARTHA, NEVER MARRIED. QUOTING
FROM WAMPLER'S DICTIONARY (A pH.D.
DISSERTATION BY A MR. WAMPLER, COMPILING ALL
THE GRADUATES OF PEABODY COLLEGE FROM 1875
TO 1909):
"HENRY ELLERSON WALKER JONES, SON OF THOMAS
LOVICK JONES
RECEIVED L.I. DEGREE IN 1894.
ORIGINAL ADDRESS: DANCYVILLE TENNESSEE;
PRESENT ADDRESS: DANCVILLE, TENNESSEE;
BUSINESS ADDRESS: STANTON, TENNESSEE.
STUDENT AT PEABODY 1892-1894.

WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT L. I. STANDS FOR IN
THE DEGREE BUT I AM GUESSING IT WAS
LICENSED INSTRUCTOR. IT WAS THE ONLY DEGREE
GIVEN IN THOSE DAYS BY PEABODY.
