Mrs. Alice Gertrude Crapser Cogbill, long time resident of LaGrange and a person active in the community and civic affairs of LaGrange and Fayette County died at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 7, 2002 at the Baptist Hospital-East in Memphis. She was 78 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services were conducted at 10 A.M. Friday, September 13, 2002 at the Graveside with special remarks given by family and friends. Interment was in the LaGrange Cemetery at LaGrange, Tennessee. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home of Somerville was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cogbill was born January 7, 1924 in Newport, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Thaddeus Charles Crapser and the late Ellen Gertrude Sullivan Crapser. She attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Rhode Island State College in Kingston, Rhode Island. Mrs. Cogbill was married November 30, 1948 to Allen Hughes Cogbill of LaGrange, retired employee of the State of Tennessee, who survives.
Mrs. Cogbill was a homemaker throughout her life and served as Director of the Fayette County Developmental Center in Somerville for a number of years before her retirement in l986. She was involved in numerous community and civic activities of the area and was an active member of the Friends of the Fayette County Library in Somerville. She was an avid reader throughout her life and enjoyed attending theatre productions. Mrs. Cogbill was instrumental in creating rural transportation to necessary services for the lower income families of Fayette County.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cogbill is survived by three daughters, Martha Cogbill Mulhern of Baytown, Texas, Elisabeth Cogbill of Mount Pleasant, Michigan and Lucy Cogbill Register, currently serving as Mayor of LaGrange, Tennessee. She is also survived by one son, Allen H. Cogbill Jr. of Los Alamos, New Mexico and four grandchildren.

Alice C. Cogbill, 78, retired director of Fayette County Developmental Center, died Saturday at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at LaGrange Cemetery(Tennessee.) Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home has charge.
She was a member of Friends of Fayette County Library. Mrs. Cogbill was the wife of Allen H. Cogbill, who survives. She also leaves three daughters, Lucy Cogbill Register of LaGrange, Martha Cogbill Mulhern of Baytown, Texas, and Elizabeth Cogbill of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; a son, Allen H. Cogbill Jr. of Los Alamos, New Mexico and four grandchildren.
