JAMES THOMPSON JONES FAMILY
Beginning of the Jones Family in Fayette County and Haywood County Tennessee areas.
The Jones ancestors came from Craven County, North Carolina in covered wagons about 1840. They settled in Fayette County - the beginnings of the family in Tennessee. James T. Jones came first, alone, on horseback with $1500 hidden in his Bible. James was stopped by robbers and ordered to "present his arms." He pulled his Bible from his pocket, held it up and told them he was unarmed except for "the Word of God." The robbers exclaimed, "Hes a crazy fool" , and let him go, unrobbed and unharmed.
When his death became probable, because of pneumonia, James T. extracted a promise from his wife, Sarah Jannet Carney Jones, that she would return to North Carolina, after his death, which she did. Their children, Lovick and Abby were married while there. In 1849 they started again for Tennessee. Sarah Jannet died enroute and was buried along the way. Her children, later returned for her body, to be buried along side their father, in the Jones Family cemetery.
